Surrey based business, Gavin Thorn Photography, was recently named Best Start-up Business, out of 37 finalists, at the EMEA Business Excellence Forums 2014 award ceremony in Brighton that was attended by 550 businesses from all over Europe and as far afield as South Africa. The Business Excellence Awards are an annual event with five ceremonies worldwide taking place in America, Canada, Indonesia, Australia and EMEA.

Gavin Thorn Photography was founded in April 2011 by Gavin Thorn, a former software engineer, who decided to give up a 27 year career to pursue a lifelong dream: to become a professional photographer.

“It’s been an interesting journey,” he said, “when I first told my work colleagues they thought I was nuts and wasted no time in telling me so. That just made me want to do it even more and in many ways fuelled my desire to succeed. It’s not been easy though and I’ve certainly learned a lot about running a business since setting out on my own 3 years ago.”

With a background in fashion photography and advanced lighting techniques the images have a contemporary but edgy style to them and are very different from the High Street portrait studio.

“My goal with every client is to start where a traditional studio finishes,” says Gavin, “and take them a lot further than they ever believed possible. Every aspect of a shoot is designed with that specific client in mind, even down to the studio we use. Not owning a studio gives me so much more flexibility by allowing me to choose one that matches the theme my clients want to shoot. Their shoot is very unique to them and they don’t just get the same pictures everyone else has had that day, week or month. It’s my job to make them be the best that they can be and give them an experience they’ll never forget. In many ways, their shoot is a journey of self-discovery. Together we create a safe environment where their true identity can come out and play.”

Gavin explains that it was his business coach, Angus Lyon, of Johnson Fellowes in Camberley who suggested he enter the awards, “and I never really thought I stood much of a chance so you can imagine my shock when Brad Sugars, the host, called out my name,” he says. “I’m still coming to terms with it and as I said in my acceptance speech, winning this award isn’t about the glitz and glamour, it’s a way to say thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me during the last 3 years.”

Gavin Thorn Photography undertakes private commissions for clients of all ages and specialises in bespoke makeover portraits, model experience days and boudoir photo-shoots. His commercial work covers band promo/press kit shoots, album covers, model portfolios and look books for fashion labels. He also runs an exclusive, high-end business and social media headshot service called ExecHeadshots™ that caters for very busy business people.
